After catching me on Channel 5 in last few weeks, many people have asked me what I was doing training the contestants on Singapore Idol. It is a well known fact that I am tone deaf and can’t hold a decent tune. My wife once remarked that if I were a singer instead of a speaker, my family would probably starve to death.

Well my training for the Idol contestants had nothing to do with vocal training (obviously), but it was to train them in managing their mental states in order to perform at their peak. It was definitely a great experience as they were extremely receptive and showed alot of enthusiasm in learning NLP to help themselves manage anxiety and stress and at the same time build within themsleves the confidence to do well.

If you look at most competitions at the highest level like the World Cup, Golf Major Championships or the Olympics, victors usually win by a single stroke or a fraction of a second. You find that at the highest level, every single athlete has the potential to win. However, what makes the difference on the day itself is the atheletes’ state of mind. Great athletes have the ability to take charge of their mental states and emotions so they can bring the bets out of themseleves anytime they have to.

I have have personally found that learning NLP (Neuro-Linguistic programming) has been my single greatest advantage in helping me to overcome negative emotions like laziness, anxiety and depression and to help me get into highly poweful states like confidence, motivation and power so that I always perform at my best.
