Recently, I was doing a recruitment seminar (to fresh graduates from the local universities) for one of the large insurance companies in Singapore. I talked about how anyone could achieve time freedom and financial freedom by becoming a financial advisor in Singapore. I shared how becoming a financial advisor was a powerful strategy in becoming your own boss and having the potential of earning unlimited income WITHOUT having to have lots of startup capital.
What shocked me as the number one reason that stopped them from even considering the career was, ‘ we don’t like to sell’ or ‘we don’t feel comfortable with being a salesperson’ Somehow, many of these grads were under the impression that by being a graduate, selling was beneath them!
I looked them in the eyes and told them, ‘ If you do not like the idea of selling to someone else, you will NEVER EVER BE RICH!!!!!’ I believe that if you don’t like salespeople or if you don’t like to sell yourself, you can forget about ever becoming wealthy.
I believe that in order to achieve ANYTHING in life, you must be great at SELLING! If you want to land that lucrative job, you must be great at SELLING YOURSELF during the interview. If you want to get that promotion, working hard and being loyal is not good enough. It is not always the smartest and most hard working person who gets the promotion. It is the person who is able to SELL HIS IDEAS to management and the person who is able to SELL and convince top management why they are the best person for the job.
The person who ends up President of the United States (or any country) is not the smartest person around (look at Bush), but it is the person who is best able to SELL themselves and their ideas to the people.
If you want to get the man or woman of your dreams, you have to SELL YOURSELF (it is called dating). All CEOs are top salespeople. They have to constantly sell their vision to their employees, sell their company, brand and products to the market and sell their business to investors. All the prophets like Jesus, Buddha, Confucious, Mohammed etc… had to sell the concept of salvation.
I have seen so many people with PhDs, Masters Degrees, from Top colleges and even people in the Gifted Program with super high IQs who will NEVER EVER be rich simply because they cannot sell.
Looking back at my life, I feel that what gave me the edge over all my friends and competitors was the fact that I learnt to enjoy and be great at selling! That is what made me into a best-selling author, one of the highest paid speakers in Asia. It also allowed me to build one of the strongest brands in education and training.
To be honest, when I first started, I felt uncomfortable with selling too. I felt uneasy asking people to give me money (which is what selling is all about). I had the wrong perception that the person who sells gains at the expense of the person buying.
Then, I realized that if you provide a product or a service that truly adds value to people’s lives, then it is a win win situation. You are helping that person solve a problem, meet a need or achieve a desire/goal. At the same time, you get rewarded for the value you have created for that person. So, go forth and create value to the whole world… and become rich in the process
Hi Adam, I just got sold on your idea of selling. Thanks!
i totally agree with you, man! ‘Art of selling’ spans across so many categories as mentioned in your post.. Perhaps this inspires a new book… hehe
I echo the same sentiment as Adam.
Everything is sales. When you made a sales call, you either sell your product or service to your client or that your client sells you on reasons he can’t buy from you. Both Way, it’s sales!
For me, i’m into copywriting… or salesmanship in print.
Whether in print or in person, selling is the number one skill to acquire. No sales, no food on the table.
Yes… maybe here is a chance for Adam to write a copy on this. The title can be “Selling Suck? What’s About Poverty For You?”

Hi,
One thing i learnt: Mnay people don’t like to sell because they are confused over rejection and refusal.
We are afraid of getting rejected when we try to sell and the feeling really sucks. But the truth is, most people do not reject us, they are just refusing our biz proposal on whatever we are selling. I.e., they will refuse anyone else, not just you in particular.
So, with the idea is mine, go ahead and sell since we will never be rejected.
How does one sell for a higher price as compared to a lower price than others then? That would be an art as well.
Hi Adam
Thanks for setting up this posting. It really changed my perception about selling.
My previous job as an application engineer requires to promote our company’s solution to potential customers. That time, I’ve no idea what selling is all about. Obviously not comfortable doing it. Things get worse when I received a label saying “High Class Beggar”!
Now looking back at the label I’ve received, I feel like laughing. 😀
Thanks Adam!
Cheers!

Hi Adam, this is a great posting. I would like to develop my selling skills too. For the start, maybe I need to kill my comfort zone..change for better
Sales is equal to your income. With the ability to sell, you can command your own income.
Those who can’t sell will have their income determined by others.
Selling is the number 1 skill in life. Not only in business or career but in relationship as well. Those who are married, you are sold.
Hi Adam,
The greatest obstacle in Sales is “FEAR” of rejection. That’s why most people do not like to sell.
If you do not like to SELL, you will be “BROKE”!
Cheers!

Thanks for the article!
I need to change my wrong attitude regarding selling: that selling is taking advantage of the buyer & that selling is a `begging` job.
Thanks Again Mr Khoo.
Frank.
We are selling since the day we were born.
We ‘sell’ ourselves by crying out loud.
We ‘sell’ to the public by dressing up nicely.
We ‘sell’ to our friends by sharing ideas.

Hi Adam, sorry for the glaring errors, could you approve this instead? Thanks.
Please allow me to share an insight into marketing.
I major in marketing and have discussed with my lecturers on the issue you have discussed.
I quote my favourite lecturer: “I will be repeating this from day 1 till the end of the semester; I’m here to make you all exceptional marketers/sales persons not peddlers. Peddlers will degrade themselves to the stage of negotiating with price. And price determines your margins. You are here to create the optimum environment for profitable sales, to communicate value.â€
Benefits-costs= Value
Exception selling by Jeff Thull (Book)
I think if anyone is interested should get their hand on it to understand the contrast between traditional selling and Thull’s understanding of exceptional selling.
Interestingly, Jeff Thull is not a NLP practitioner but I find his approach similar to NLP.
I’ve found a link which allows a preview to the chapter 1:
http://www.primeresource.com/dwn/exceptional-selling-chapter-one.pdf
I believe the concept of traditional selling is ingrained in everyone’s mind which causes so much conflict and fear of selling.
I’m not surprised that many salespeople are learning NLP to become better communicators.
Hope it helps!
Kind regards,
Benny
